The National Film and Television School (NFTS) announces it is the first film school to partner with the Assistant Directors Association (ADA), which represents Assistant Directors (ADs) and Runners in the UK, on its new Student Programme.
All students enrolled onto the new NFTS Assistant Directing and Floor Managing Diploma receive membership to the ADA, which gives them full access to the ADA network, private Facebook groups and opportunities to apply to participating members for on-set placements.
All students have a profile on the ADA website where they can list their experience and areas of interest so members can find the best match. Upon graduation, all NFTS Assistant Directing graduates will be able to join the ADA as 3rd Assistant Director or Runner.*
Richard Lingard, Student Programme Coordinator, Assistant Directors Association says: “We are incredibly pleased to welcome the NFTS as the first film school partner for the ADA Student Programme. It’s a privilege to work with such a revered institution and to have advised on the new Assistant Directing and Floor Managing Diploma. There hasn’t been any formal training path for ADs up until now and we wholeheartedly believe that there needs to be a proper training funnel like this – combining on-set placements with off-set teaching to equip the ADs of tomorrow with the required skills. Our Student Programme dovetails perfectly with courses like the NFTS Diploma and is designed to help students seamlessly glide from studying to working as a professional freelancer. Students then leave with the ADA seal of approval and can easily be identified as having the appropriate training by productions looking to hire.”
Nik Powell, NFTS Director says: “We would like to extend our thanks to the ADA for all the help they have given us with the launch of our new Assistant Directing and Floor Managing Diploma. Their input and support has helped us develop an exciting and compelling new course and the new ADA Student Programme will give the students vital access to work experience as well as the opportunity to build a network of contacts to help them get work upon graduation.”
The NFTS Assistant Directing and Floor Managing Diploma is led by NFTS Head of Production Management, Bex Hopkins and delivered in partnership with the BBC. In addition to the ADA, the course is supported by the Production Guild.
